This Danish study examined whether people with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) have a higher risk of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). Using national health registry data covering more than 29,000 adults, the researchers compared individuals with HCM to matched people without the condition and followed them for up to 20 years.

The findings showed that HCM was associated with an increased risk of OHCA in people aged 18 to 85 years. Importantly, the risk of cardiac arrest was strongly linked to the presence of heart failure, both recently and over the longer term. The authors conclude that this highlights the need for improved risk stratification—better ways to identify which patients with HCM are at highest risk—in order to strengthen primary prevention and better target life-saving interventions before cardiac arrest occurs.
