On the night of February 28, 2023, a peaceful slumber turned into a fight for survival. At 11 pm, a 56-year-old woman woke up feeling unwell. Within minutes, she lost consciousness, her breathing labored. Her husband, Rich, and son, Josh, witnessed the terrifying scene and immediately called 911.
Their quick action proved crucial. Paramedic Justin Langer and New Haven firefighters arrived within six minutes, but the woman was already near death. Justin used an AED to revive her heart, and she was rushed to Yale Hospital, where she was put on life support and placed in an induced coma for five days.
Miraculously, she awoke on the fifth day, her brain protected from damage thanks to an ice cap. She credits her survival to Rich and Josh's courage in calling 911 and their unwavering faith in her recovery. Had they not been home that night, the outcome would have been tragically different.
This woman, a marathon runner, Bikram yoga enthusiast, and avid horse rider before her sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), now lives with profound gratitude for her family and the unsung heroes of the New Haven Fire Department. Her life's mission has become serving other survivors and grieving families through creative art workshops, a testament to the transformative power of her experience.
This story honors Rich and Josh, whose decisive action in the face of crisis saved a life. It also celebrates the dedication of first responders like Justin Langer, who work tirelessly to protect and serve their communities. Above all, it's a reminder of the preciousness of life and the importance of cherishing every moment with loved ones.
