Survivor: Summer Haskins

Date of Event:

Location of Event: Home

Rescuer(s):
Kristopher Haskins

On May 27, 2022, Summer and Kristopher returned home after dropping their oldest son off at senior prom. They got home and Kristopher left to bring food home. Summer opened the door when he returned, Kristopher put food on the table, and Summer collapsed. At thirty-eight years old, sudden cardiac arrest was her first and only symptom of a condition she did not yet know would nearly take her life.

Saving starts at home: CPR

Kristopher was with the Navy for 24 years. He called 911 and began CPR within seconds. Because of him, she lived. Later, Summer would learn she had an underlying heart condition. The diagnosis explained the silence, the suddenness, the collapse. But it did not explain the survival. That part belonged to her husband, to the dispatcher on the phone, and to the firefighters who took over when they arrived.

Weeks later, they stood together, survivor, rescuer, dispatcher, and fire crew, meeting not in crisis but in gratitude.

Summer is forever grateful to her rescuers, especially her husband for knowing what to do and starting CPR right away. In Summer’s words, “he is my hero.”
