Survivor: Jerry Babiuk

Rescuer(s):
Jay Williams

On a chilly morning in Calgary, Alberta, an ordinary hockey game took a terrifying turn. During a recreational ice time at Winsport Arena, a burning sensation in his chest forced the player to leave the ice. As he headed towards the dressing rooms, he found them locked, and suddenly collapsed, hitting his head on a metal beam.

Jay's Quick Action

At that very moment, Jay Williams, in the adjacent dressing room, heard the commotion. Opening the door to let the player in, he was shocked to see him collapsed on the floor. Without hesitation, Jay began administering CPR. Don Sanford and others soon joined in, while an announcement was made throughout the arena seeking medical professionals. Jay continued CPR, then used an AED when it arrived, until paramedics rushed the player to Foothills Hospital.

A Fight for Survival

The player arrived at the hospital in critical condition. Dr. Trpkov, using every possible method, fought tirelessly to keep him alive. After 12 hours of shock treatment and the use of a Lucas Compression device, the patient had flatlined nine times. Stabilized but with his kidneys failing, he received two blood transfusions and was placed in a medically induced coma.

Catharine's Strength

During this harrowing time, the player's wife, Catharine, faced agonizing decisions, guided by doctors, with their 10-year-old son by her side. Her courage and quick thinking in choosing to continue treatment ultimately saved her husband's life.

A Miraculous Recovery

After days in a coma, the patient stabilized enough to have his tubes removed. Though weak and facing a long road to recovery, including dialysis and rehabilitation, he was alive. On May 28th, he walked out of the hospital on his own, a testament to the swift actions of Jay, the dedication of Dr. Trpkov, and the unwavering support of Catharine and his community.

Gratitude and Hope

The player expresses deep gratitude for everyone who helped him, from the medical professionals to his friends and colleagues at Vermillion Energy. He acknowledges that without Jay's quick response and the collective efforts of many, he wouldn't be here today.

This story highlights the importance of CPR training, the critical role of bystanders, and the unwavering strength of family and community in the face of adversity.
