In 2012, a seminal study (attached) looking at sudden cardiac arrest in half- and full-marathons (between 2000-2010) was published in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine. The principal investigators (Drs. Jonathan Kim and Aaron Baggish) are re-examining this question and now looking at the incidence and causes of these cases between 2010-2023. The investigators have already had the cooperation of 40+ individuals who suffered sudden cardiac arrest (or next of kin of sudden cardiac death) during these races.

If this happened to you or you know anyone who had sudden cardiac arrest while running a half-or full-marathon between these years (2010-2023), please email Dr. Kim at Jonathan.kim [at] emory.edu if interested in participating in this important study. The study team will then contact you for enrollment and full details of the study.
