PITTSBURGH--More than 40 volunteers, including college students, helped raise funds for the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation earlier this week through the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation Charity ASSIST Raffle. The Pens Foundation established the Raffle to help Pittsburgh-based nonprofit organizations pursue their respective missions. A different nonprofit is chosen for each home game; the SCA Foundation was selected for the Pens vs. the Detroit Red Wings game on December 13.
Though the Pens did not win that night, the SCA Foundation turned out to be a big winner. Sales of $5 raffle tickets came to more than $11,000 and the Foundation will receive proceeds of about $7,000. Robert Kerr held the winning raffle ticket and will receive a $4,000 prize.
"We could not be more pleased with our participation in the Pens Charity ASSIST Raffle," said Mary Newman, SCA Foundation president. "The volunteers were wonderful. Their enthusiastic efforts really made a difference and will strengthen our ability to raise awareness and help save lives threatened by sudden cardiac arrest," she said. "We are particularly indebted to Robert Morris University students and Amanda Seagle, who organized the event. And, we deeply appreciate the opportunity afforded by the Pens Foundation."
Seagle, an SCA Foundation volunteer, is a University of Pittsburgh graduate student and American Red Cross employee.
