ORLANDO --The iRescU Project was presented November 12-13 during the American Heart Association Resuscitation Science Symposium during the "Best Original Resuscitation Science" Poster Sessions.

The first poster, CPR/AED Apps: What’s Out There and Are They a Reliable Source of Public Lifesaving Information?, was a qualitative technical review of all English language CPR/AED apps available as of January 2011 (54 apps). Nadine Levick, MD, MPH, and colleagues found that only five of 54 apps had been updated to meet 2010 AHA guidelines, and only one app had been studied for operational validation. Authors concluded there is a need for uniform standards for design, usability, access, and clinical effectiveness of CPR-AED instruction apps.

The second poster, iRescU-Saving Lives and Data: A New Multi-platform App to
Integrate Social Media and Bridge Logistic Challenges in the Chain of Survival, described the need for improved bystander intervention in sudden cardiac emergencies and the development of iRescU, a CPR/AED mobile device app designed to help address this need. iRescU uses a unique data management architecture to automatically identify and call 911 or the local EMS number, provide the location of the nearest AED, and provide two-way data capture. Since iRescU uses cloud technology, it may be used in any location and it is transferable, translatable, and infinitely scalable. iRescU is expected to go live in early 2012. It will be offered as a free public health service.
