I saved my husband's life

July 17, 2019 I was doing dishes when I heard a noise coming from the living room. I just figured it was one of my dogs so didn’t think much about it! However my husband has being saying he just wasn’t feeling right and did not feel good so I thought I better check it out. When I walked into the living room I noticed my husband stuck between his recliner and tv table. It looked like he had fallen asleep. Now my husband drives a truck for a living so this has happened before with him being so tired! So I yelled at him to wake up and he didn’t respond by the time I got to him he was making gurgling noises his eyes were rolled into the back of his head. I threw the tv table out of my way and grabbed John out of the chair laying him flat out and immediately started chest compressions!! Now I have been trained in first aid and CPR however never used it on anyone! I soon realized that when I threw the tv table out of the way that included the cell phone I needed to call 911 so with my leg and one hand still doing compressions I tried reaching it but I couldn’t. I gave John a big breath and ran to get it and came back. I performed hands-only CPR for 20 min before the fire and ambulance finally showed up and took over! They had to shock John over 4 times to get him stabilized enough to get to the hospital. They worked on him 37 more min until they were able to get a somewhat better heart rate. We went to the closest hospital which is 20 min away where they put a breathing tube in and stabilized him and shocked him a few more times then transferred to London health science Center in London, Ontario which was another 45 min away. They rushed him in to see what was going on and placed a stent in his right side of his heart that was 100% blocked! He was placed in a coma and they placed him in therapeutic hypothermia for 24 hours. John woke up a couple of hours after they started warming him up and had the breathing tube out and sitting up in a chair 2 hours after that in the ICU the doctors couldn’t believe it and neither could I. He was over an hour without a regular heartbeat and there he was alive. We were in the hospital for about 2 weeks and he was discharged on his 41st birthday!! Four days later he was admitted back to hospital this time for pneumonia that he caught from his stay at the hospital. He had to have a chest tube placed to drain the fluid and was discharged another 2 weeks later. This man never ceases to amaze me and I am so thankful that I didn’t panic, that I was home when it happened and I knew what to do.
