Neurological outcomes after patients suffer cardiac arrest at home are similar between low-and high-income areas in Vienna

A recent study presented at the European Emergency Medicine Congress found that neurological recovery after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) at home is similar between patients living in low- and high-income neighborhoods in Vienna, Austria. The study analyzed data from 676 adult patients treated between January 2020 and December 2022, combining clinical records with socioeconomic information based on residential addresses.

Key findings include:

  • Neurological outcomes were comparable across income levels, suggesting that socioeconomic status may not strongly influence long-term recovery after OHCA at home.

  • Bystander CPR rates were lower in lower-income areas, indicating a potential gap in immediate emergency response despite similar overall outcomes.

The study highlights the importance of equitable emergency care access and the potential impact of targeted community interventions, such as CPR training in lower-income neighborhoods.
