Three off-duty Salem Fire Department firefighters/paramedics proved their dedication to saving lives extends beyond their shifts when they sprung into action during a medical emergency on a flight from Portland to San Diego.
Firefighter/Paramedic TJ Greenhill, Engineer/Paramedic Nick Bradley, and Captain Willy Giddings were simply passengers on the plane when a 74-year-old woman experienced a medical crisis. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the trio immediately assessed the patient and identified the need for CPR.
Working seamlessly as a team, one member began CPR while the others set up an AED and gathered additional medical equipment. Their quick and coordinated response paid off: after two minutes of CPR, the patient showed signs of life, regaining color and starting to mumble. The firefighters continued to monitor and assist her until they could transfer care to an ambulance crew upon landing in San Diego.
This incident highlights the unwavering commitment of these first responders, who didn't hesitate to use their skills and training even when off duty. Their heroic actions undoubtedly saved a life, serving as a reminder that heroes can be found in the most unexpected places.
