Survivor: Paul Asato
Date of Event:
Rescuer(s):Trudy Asato
The night of March 15, 2022, started like any other for Paul Asato. He followed his usual bedtime routine, feeling fine and content. Unbeknownst to him, the course of his life was about to change dramatically.
His wife, Trudy, remembers the night vividly. Their daughter was on spring break, and they had stayed up late enjoying each other's company. Trudy finally went to bed around 10 pm, falling asleep quickly. She was jolted awake by Paul gasping for air, his arms flailing wildly. He hit her, then fell back onto the pillow, eyes rolled back, his breathing stopping completely.
Trudy's quick thinking saved Paul's life. She immediately called 911, and within minutes, EMTs, firefighters, and police arrived. It took three shocks from a defibrillator and 15 minutes of CPR to restart Paul's heart and get oxygen to his brain. He spent three days in a coma in the ICU and another seven days in the cardiac unit at Kaiser.
Paul is eternally grateful to Trudy and everyone who helped save his life and care for his family during this ordeal. He now has a defibrillator implanted in his chest and experiences good days and bad days, but he takes life one day at a time, thanking God for allowing him to be here.
Paul believes Trudy is a true hero. Her quick actions and unwavering love saved his life. He nominates her for recognition, highlighting her courage and selflessness in the face of a terrifying situation.
Paul's story is a testament to the power of love and the importance of cherishing every moment. It's a reminder that heroes can be found in the most unexpected places, often in the quiet strength of those we love the most.
