Highmark WalkPITTSBURGH, PA--The Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation will once again have a team during this year’s Highmark Walk for a Healthy Community in Pittsburgh, PA. The 5K Walk, presented by Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield, will take place at 9:00 am on Saturday, May 18, at Stage AE on the North Shore of Pittsburgh.

“Knowing CPR and knowing how to use an AED are key to saving someone who goes into cardiac arrest. I know that first hand. Doing something is better than nothing in an emergency situation,“ said Susan Koeppen, KDKA TV news anchor and sudden cardiac arrest survivor, who serves as SCA Foundation's National Spokesperson.

Susan's Story

Beth Sutton, Susan Koeppen, Rescuer Lt. Dan Elias, Mary NewmanSusan Koeppen, who worked for CBS News in New York, NY for seven years, had returned to Pittsburgh in 2011 to begin working as an anchor for local CBS affiliate KDKA TV. She suffered sudden cardiac arrest that November, while jogging with friends in the Shadyside neighborhood in Pittsburgh. She was resuscitated thanks to immediate bystander CPR and use of a defibrillator, and she returned to work in January 2012. Her story has become one of inspiration and enlightenment. “I am now dedicated to raising awareness about sudden cardiac arrest—and helping to educate the public about the differences between heart attack and sudden cardiac arrest,” said Koeppen, who serves as the SCA Foundation's National Spokesperson. More...

About the Highmark Walk

Members of the SCA Foundation 2012 TeamThe Highmark Walk for a Healthy Community brings together 68 nonprofit organizations in Western Pennsylvania that deliver vital health and human service programs in the community. The primary goal of the walk is to help these community benefit organizations raise money for their respective missions. The secondary goal of the walk is to energize community members to have a greater hand in their health by becoming or staying physically active.

While there is no registration fee for the walk, all walkers and supporters are encouraged to raise funds for the organization of their choice. Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield underwrites the cost of the walk so that 100 percent of funds raised by walkers and supporters goes directly to the selected nonprofit organization, in this case, the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation.
