February 12, 2008–DAYTONA BEACH–HalifaxHealth will present Florida’s first live online automated Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) case on Thursday, February 28, at 6:30 pm on www.OR-Live.com.

A majority of the 200,000 to 400,000 people who die suddenly in the United States each year do so as a result of heart rhythm abnormalities known as ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation. An ICD is a battery-powered device that significantly improves the chances of survival in people at high risk for these arrhythmias. Modern ICDs are sophisticated devices that are able to perform three general functions: treatment of dangerous ventricular arrhythmias, record the heart's activity in the device memory, and standard pacemaker functions.

Hanscy Seide, MD, will perform the procedure and Donald Stoner, MD, Chief Medical Officer at Halifax Health Medical Center, will moderate. Dr. Seide, who is with Cardiology Consultants in Daytona Beach, has implanted more than 350 defibrillators during the past three years.
