Nominations due October 23

Bystander intervention often means the difference between life and death for victims of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). The Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation’s People Saving People™ award honors 'ordinary' people with extraordinary spirits who have helped save the lives of SCA victims. The purpose of the award is to increase awareness about the critical need for laypersons to be prepared to intervene in sudden cardiac emergencies.

Nominees for the award should be individuals who helped save the life of an SCA victim, but did not have a work-related duty to respond. Lifesaving actions could include one or more of the following: Calling 9-1-1, providing CPR, and using an automated external defibrillator (AED). Preference will be given to cases that occurred within the past five years.

To nominate someone for the People Saving People award, please submit a 300-500 word narrative that includes the following information:

  • Your name and contact information
  • Name and contact information of the nominee
  • Name, age at time of incident, gender, and contact information of the SCA survivor (with his or her permission)
  • Date of incident
  • City, state/province, country where incident occurred
  • Location of arrest (workplace, school, fitness club, etc.)
  • The reasons why you think this person deserves special recognition
  • A photo or photos of the nominated hero, if possible with the SCA survivor (optional)
  • A statement granting the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation permission to publish the narrative and photo(s) at www.sca-aware.org.

Self-nominations are welcome and encouraged. Nominations should be sent to info [at] sca-aware.org (preferred), faxed to 724-935-6044, or mailed to the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation, 7500 Brooktree Road, Suite 207, Wexford, PA 15090.

All entries will be acknowledged through publication on this website and certificates of recognition from the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation. The first place award winner will be recognized at the Emergency Cardiovascular Care Update, December 11, in San Diego, CA, and will win an AED, which may be donated to an organization of the winner's choice. The deadline for entry submission is October 23. Questions? Contact info [at] sca-aware.org or call 724-934-0034.
