WEYMOUTH, MA--Fast action by police officers and firefighters helped save the life of a man who collapsed inside a store Sunday night, Norwell Police Chief Ted Ross said.

Special Police Officer Daniel Campanelli, who was working a traffic detail near the Hannaford’s supermarket on Washington Street shortly after 11 p.m. Sunday, was approached by someone reporting there was a medical emergency inside the store, Ross said.

Campanelli requested assistance on his radio and went inside the store, where he found a 29-year-old man who was not breathing.

“The victim was unresponsive and had no pulse,” Ross said.

Campanelli and a bystander began to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation, the chief said.

Police officer Daniel Dooley had heard Campanelli's radio call and headed to the store. Dooley is the department’s CPR and first aid instructor. Dooley brought the cruiser’s medical bag and defibrillator.

“Officer Dooley then attached the defibrillator pads and as a result a shock was given to the victim and CPR continued,” the chief said. “After several minutes, the victim began moving his arms and the officers could detect an audible respiration and a palpable pulse.”

Norwell firefighters arrived and took over care of the man, administering another shock and continuing CPR. The victim, who was not identified, was taken to South Shore Hospital for treatment.

“This was outstanding work by the officers involved, the civilian bystander involved and the Norwell Fire Department,” Ross said.

The police department’s cruisers were all equipped with defibrillators in July.
