AHA Releases 2015 Heart and Stroke Statistics

New report suggests the incidence of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest is 326,200. The average survival rate is 10.6% and survival with good neurologic function is 8.3%. Nearly one in three victims survives when the arrest is witnessed by a bystander.

Distrust of Police Is Top Reason Latinos Don't Call 9-1-1 for Cardiac Arrest

WASHINGTON, DC--Fear of police, language barriers, lack of knowledge of cardiac arrest symptoms and financial concerns prevent Latinos – particularly those of lower socioeconomic status – from seeking emergency medical help and performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), according to a study published online yesterday in Annals of Emergency Medicine ("Barriers to Calling 911 and Learning and Performing Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for Residents of Primarily Latino, High-Risk Neighborhoods in Denver, Colorado")

Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute Physician-Researcher Awarded NHLBI Grant to Study Sudden Cardiac Arrest

Funds to help develop prevention strategies for deadly heart condition
 
LOS ANGELES, CA--One of medicine's most prominent experts in sudden cardiac arrest has received a new $2.36 million grant to study how to better predict the deadly heart condition that kills an estimated 300,000 Americans each year.
 
Over recent years, Sumeet S. Chugh, MD, and his team of researchers in the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute have identified several risk factors for sudden cardiac arrest, including levels of sex hormones in the blood, genetics and electrical and structural abnormalities of the heart.
 
The new grant from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute will support research with patients 35-59 years old.
