My Story: An Easter Miracle

March 27, 2016 started out just like any other day.It was Easter Sunday 6:30 am.I put water on the stove for coffee and then well....I hit the floor, apparently with enough force to jar my wife from her sleep. Usually she would roll over at this hour and go back to sleep, but not this morning. She instinctively got up to check out whatever it was she had heard and that's when she found me lying in the kitchen floor mostly unresponsive, unable to speak or move. She immediately ran to get her phone, called 911, and upon returning to the kitchen she discovered that I had managed to flip myself over on to my face and she couldn't roll me back over, so she ran out and down the stairs beating on the walls as she went yelling for our neighbor.

Still trying to understand why

The Serious Fright Lurking in Our Communities

When we think of October, Halloween typically comes to mind; when dressed as monsters, ghosts and goblins, we take delight in spooky costumes and scaring others. Sadly, there’s a serious, legitimate fright lurking within our community every month of the year that strikes out-of-the-blue, but wears no disguise. Most of us don’t know about the threat of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA).

SCA is an electrical disruption of the heart’s normal rhythm. It is not the same as a heart attack. The only way to survive SCA is with CPR and shocks administered from an automated external defibrillator (AED).

"Miracle Meaux" survived due to the efforts of citizen bystanders who stepped in to provide CPR and a shock from an AED in his office building. Heartbeat NOLA also raises funds for its Public Access Defibrillator program. Heartbeat NOLA’s goal is to make survival from SCA is the norm rather than the exception.
