Heart-Related Deaths Spike at Christmas

Study Highlights

  • Heart-related deaths spike around Christmas, and the effect may not be because of the cold winter season.
  • Using data from New Zealand allowed researchers to separate any “winter effect” from a “holiday effect.”
  • More research is needed to determine the cause for the increase during the Christmas season.

DALLAS, TX — Heart-related deaths spike during Christmas, but the effect may have nothing to do with the cold winter season, according to new research in Journal of the American Heart Association, the Open Access Journal of the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association.
