NY Schools to Require CPR, AED Training

ALBANY, NY--Survivors of sudden cardiac arrest and the mothers of children who didn’t live gathered Thursday to watch the state Board of Regents vote to require all students to be taught CPR before high school graduation day.

The vote to adopt regulations was the final hurdle in a 15-year push by the American Heart Association to require New York schools to include hands-only cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) instruction and a heart defibrillator demonstration. New York became the 26th state to pass such a law in 2014, triggering a public comment and rule-making process.

CPR classes will start next month in some schools. Instruction will be given to children 12 and older.

“I’m here and I’m alive because my son learned CPR in school,” said Joel Stashenko, a reporter for the New York Law Journal in Albany who collapsed at home on Memorial Day weekend three years ago and was kept alive by his 13 year old son, Casey.

American Heart Association and Advocates Celebrate that 1.5 Million American Students Will Now Be CPR Trained Every School Year

New York State passes the "CPR in Schools Law," joining 25 other states in mandating that CPR is required curriculum

DALLAS, TX--The American Heart Association (AHA), along with other advocates--including the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation--applauds the New York State Board of Regents for passing legislation to become the 26th state mandating that CPR training become a required part of the public school curriculum. With this law, which takes effect on October 7th, there will now be 1.5 million American teens trained in CPR every single school year.
