ICDs Lead to Decrease in Cardiac Arrests

DALLAS-- Implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) account for one-third of the decrease in cardiac arrests caused by ventricular fibrillation (VF) in North-Holland, according to research in Circulation, an American Heart Association journal. Researchers found:

  • The incidence of VF-related cardiac arrest dropped significantly between 1995 and 2008.
  • In greater Amsterdam, ICDs prevented 81 cardiac arrests between 2005 and 2008.

VF is an abnormal heart rhythm that makes the heart quiver so it can't pump blood.

A Special Invitation to Sudden Cardiac Arrest Survivors, Families and Rescuers

Join us at the Emergency Cardiovascular Care Update (ECCU 20120) in Orlando, FL, September 11-15, the premier venue by the Citizen CPR Foundation (CCPRF) that brings together every link in the “Chain of Survival,” addressing the nation’s most lethal killer: Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA).

Survivors play a special role at the conference and this year the Citizen CPR Foundation is partnering with the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation and others to create a very special program. This year’s theme is “Go for the Gold! Become a Champion in the Race to Save more Lives.”

"Be part of the largest gathering of Sudden Cardiac Arrest Survivors and their rescuers ever attempted!," said Tom Aufderheide, MD, President, CCPRF.

Mission & Vision

The mission of the Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) Foundation is to prevent death and disability from sudden cardiac arrest.
