What You Need to Know About “AED Failures”

AEDs save lives when they are properly maintained and used quickly by bystanders

A new study, “Analysis of Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Device Failures Reported to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA),” published online in the Annals of Emergency Medicine, requires attention and careful analysis.(1)  It should also serve as a reminder to program coordinators that device maintenance is fundamental to the success of every AED program.

PA Residents: Please Support PA HB 1610

The Sudden Cardiac Arrest Prevention Act (House Bill 1610), is slated to be voted on this month when the Pennsylvania Legislature comes back into session. The Act would require the education of coaches, trainers, student athletes, and parents about the symptoms of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) prior to participating in athletics. In addition, it ensures that children who show the symptoms of SCA prior to, during, or after an athletic activity are properly screened by a medical professional before being allowed to return to athletic activities.
