Churchill County Junior High School nurse Janice Meroth saved the life of a student who had a cardiac emergency in December.
The close call prompted the school board to approve the purchase of two automated external defibrillators (AED) and accessories for both the junior and senior high schools.

Two students at the high school have Long QT Syndrome, a condition that can cause sudden cardiac death. Also, within the last year, two other students had cardiac emergencies, and neither one had a known cardiac condition.

Nevada law does not require School Districts to purchase defibrillators if the county's population does not exceed 100,000; however, having heard the facts and history of cardiac emergencies in local schools, the Churchill County board unanimously agreed to purchase them.

Parents, the school district and the community can now feel at ease that their youth are safe with the best technology and quality staff in their schools.
