Championship Hearts Foundation - Austin, TX

Championship Hearts Foundation offers free heart screenings for student athletes, ages 14-18, at the Heart Hospital of Austin.

This quarterly event is offered as a community service, with generous volunteer support of cardiologists from Children’s Cardiology Associates of Austin, Heart & Vascular of Central Texas, and Austin Heart.

Over 6000 students have been screened at Championship Hearts events during the last eight years, with around 1% having been referred for further cardiac testing. The noninvasive screening test uses a limited, two-dimensional echocardiogram, or ultrasound of the heart to detect Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) the leading cause of sudden death in young athletes. The test takes around two to five minute and is painless.

Screening event attendees (students
and parents) also learn about the use of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs)
