The Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation's Metro DC Affiliate encompasses the District of Columbia, Northern Virginia and Maryland. It is headquartered in Alexandria, VA.
The Affiliate focuses on raising awareness, growing the SCA Survivor Network, and spreading the word about the importance of early CPR and easy access to automated external defibrillators (AEDs) for victims of sudden cardiac arrest. The Metro DC Affiliate focuses especially on reaching out to schools and colleges to raise awareness.
"It is essential that CPR be taught to students in school and that AEDs are readily available in every single school," says Matthew Strauss, Metro DC Affiliate Coordinator.
He should know. In 2003, Matt, then 17, used an AED to save the life of a 48-year-old spectator at a basketball game at Penn Hills High School in Pittsburgh, PA. (See attachment.)
