Airport - protecting property?

I've recently traveled for the first time with my AED.  At some airports it works great.  I put my stuff on the x-ray belt.  Then I'm escorted between the machines to the other side where I can pick up my property.  Then they take me over to the area where they pad me down for inspection.  However in some airports the security checkpoint is not set up that way.  For example at Logan airport in Boston.  I was asked to put my property on the x-ray belt and then go to the exit and wait for someone to escort me to the other side of the security checkpoint for my hand check.  All the while my property including laptop was just sitting there.  I could not see if for at least 10min.  Anyone could of walked off with my laptop.

How forceful can I be about securing my property?  Anyone else have similar experiences?  I'm a little reluctant to create too big of a scene at the checkpoint but not being able to secure my property is really not acceptable.

Thanks,

Jerry
