Thousands of lives could be saved each year if more people understood sudden cardiac arrest and the simple things anyone can do to save a life.

The mission of the nonprofit Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation is to raise awareness about sudden cardiac arrest and help save lives.

We plan to conduct quantitative and qualitative research to identify the most effective ways to communicate with the public about the urgent need for laypersons to recognize sudden cardiac arrest when it occurs and to take immediate action. This information will then be used as the foundation for development of a public awareness campaign.

Sudden cardiac arrest—when the heart suddenly stops beating—is the third leading cause of death in the U.S. It affects about 1,000 people of all ages outside hospitals every day. On average, about 10 percent of victims survive. That’s equivalent to the number of people who would die if two jet planes crashed every day and killed nearly everyone on board.

A recent study by the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation in partnership with StrataVerve consumer research, was the first stage of our public awareness research. The study revealed that despite its pervasiveness, sudden cardiac arrest is not on consumers’ radar. The public doesn’t understand the life-threatening nature of cardiac arrest or the fact that CPR and defibrillation—when provided immediately by bystanders—can restore life and preserve brain function.

In fact, when bystanders provide CPR and use automated external defibrillators, or AEDs, about 50 percent of victims survive.

Please support our research so we can create effective messaging about sudden cardiac arrest that will motivate people to act quickly with CPR and AEDs to help save lives.

You can save a life!  Contribute to this national campaign designed to save lives threatened by sudden cardiac arrest. Make a gift of $25 or more by September 15th and you will be entered into a drawing to win an automated external defibrillator!

Thank you for your support.

P.S. Our goal is to raise these funds by September 15th so we can begin our research October 1st. #youcansavealife
